January Recap: The Rutherford House
2015 was a year full of change and growth at The Rutherford House thanks to the dedication by our awesome members, staff, and board members! Our center kicked off the New Year and 2016 with a bang- planning new and exciting activities for Dauphin Counties 55+ community.
Our journey into the New Year began with a month full of fresh and newly developed activities. One activity that our members enjoyed was a Nutrition Links program on making healthy eating part of your total lifestyle. These Nutrition Links classes will be held the first Wednesday of each month at 12pm and will include a hands on cooking activity for a different meal every time!
Another presentation held at the center also focused on keeping your body healthy. Jessica from Brookedale Senior Living Solutions had a health chat with a group of our members on arthritis. She helped the members understand risk factors, causes, different types, and what they can do to help prevent this.
Other January activities included more DIY (do it yourself) types of classes. One of those lessons was on hand-knitting scarves. Students from local colleges instructed the activity and helped both knitting-beginners and knitting-pros to begin a scarf of their own. The students are hoping to make another visit to The Rutherford House in March. The second hands-on activity for the month was a “Music Through the Years” Sing-a-long with Rhonda from Legacy. Members were able to break out their singing voices and join in on some musical classics and sing to some songs that Rhonda put a little twist on!
Lastly, we held our monthly Birthday Luncheon on January 22nd and couldn’t have asked for a better turnout. The buffet was filled with wonderful food, over 30 great people, and plenty of smiles.
January was certainly full of some excitement from new activities to Harrisburg’s historic Winter Storm Jonas but we are anxious to begin February with even more new opportunities. As always, we invite you to join us this month for new events to help The Rutherford House become the liveliest senior center around!
