United Way's 26th Annual Day of Caring
The Rutherford House was joined by 19 volunteers from Maher Duessel's CPA Firm for United Way of the Capital Region's 26th Annual Day of Caring volunteer event. United Way of the Capital Region describes Day of Caring as "a one-day event set aside for volunteer opportunities at local nonprofit agencies." United Way of the Capital Region secures volunteers from local companies and matches them with local nonprofits in need.
The Rutherford House utilized their volunteers to help organize, clean and touch-up the many rooms in the formerly known Rutherford Mansion. Volunteers did everything from painting, moving furniture, sorting supplies, dusting, mopping, sweeping and organizing. With direction from The Rutherford House's Director and Program Coordinator, Kyla and Briana, respectively, the volunteers condensed many of the miscellaneous supplies into two categories - donations and yard sale goods. Moving forward, The Rutherford House will be having a yard sale from Tuesday, October 9th, 2018 until Saturday, October 13th, 2018.
This is the second year since Kyla has been employed at The Rutherford House that she has helped see through the volunteer event. This year, Kyla approached Day of Caring with a thoughtful plan and a lot of food. The itinerary began with a sugary and caffeine-fueled breakfast from Dunkin Donuts, and a short presentation about the history and current happenings at The Rutherford House. Then, the volunteers were split up into small groups and assigned a labeled room with directions of what needed to be done. The volunteers breezed through their labor and enjoyed Santo's East Pizza for lunch and a brief ping-pong tournament. The volunteers rounded out the day organizing the stage in the auditorium as a group and socializing with The Rutherford House's pet therapy dog for the day, Ladybug. Overall, the event was a huge success and a great help.
