The Rutherford House is awarded the 2019-2020 Pennsylvania Senior Community Center Grant!
The purpose of the Pennsylvania Department of Aging's Senior Community Center Grant is to provide funding for senior community centers (SCCs) to increase their participation and programming, attract a new generation of older adults, and enable SSCs to provide a safe and healthy environment for participants. In June, The Rutherford House was notified that $34,235 would be awarded to the center for three main projects:
Painting of the art room and bridge room, as well as the hallway connecting the two rooms.
Updating the lighting throughout the center.
Partnering with The YMCA Center for Healthy Living to provide an exercise program at the center for members.
The inspiration for the projects came from wanting to improve the visibility for members and the overall appearance and to provide exercise every day of the week.
The bridge room is a large room that is typically only used two days a week to play bridge; however, the room has the opportunity to be multi-functional with improved lighting. With updated lighting and new paint, the room will also function as a library and quiet space for members. The art room, which will also be receiving fresh paint and lighting, will be remade to showcase our members' artwork and create optimal space for creativity. Finally, The YMCA Center for Healthy Living will come to the center to provide the ENHANCE Fitness program. ENHANCE Fitness is an evidence-based group exercise program for older adults that uses simple, easy-to-learn movements that motivate individuals (particularly those with arthritis) to stay active throughout their life. ENHANCE Fitness is held three days a week, in addition to regularly scheduled exercise.
With the COVID-19 pandemic affecting operations, the projects may change slightly. Still, it does not change the positive impact that this grant will have on the center! We are looking forward to getting the renovations underway so that our members come back to a fresh, bright center and improved programming.
Be sure to check back in a few months to see before and after photos of the center!
